What is a chimney?

The most basic definition of a chimney which you would find in a dictionary is: ‘a vertical channel or pipe that conducts smoke and combustion gases up from a fire or furnace and typically through the roof of a building.’

Does my house still use my masonry chimney if I do not have a fireplace?

There is no simple answer to this question.  There are many different types of appliances that can use a masonry chimney to vent combustible gasses like but not limited to; a wood stove, furnace, boiler, hot water heater or a combination of the above listed.
